I discovered in my college years how clay can be used to create unique pieces for everyday use. I enrolled in ceramics classes at Florida International U in Miami every semester for 4 years in college. I mention often that I went to college on a golf scholarship to learn more about clay. It is true! “I am fascinated that as a clay artist I am able to create something out of nothing. These pieces are food safe and will be held and utilized in people’s homes, given as gifts and more.
The process of working in clay shows me many life lessons analogies. It is similar to golf in many ways, having to do with integrity and transparency. I continued classes after graduation to further advance and gain more insight on making forms and surface decoration possibilities. I attended ceramic classes and workshops that helped refine my own signature in clay. At this point I knew I needed a home studio to have unlimited access to my work.
I am sensitive to the characteristics of clay coming from the raw ground and made into a useful product.” I shape and transform them into ceramic vessels that are highly functional and pleasing to the eye.
The added joy is that these treasures in clay are created to be shared with others who will complete the piece in their environment.
I would say one of the biggest influences in my clay experiences has been the time I spent at Callanwolde Fine Art Center in Atlanta. I attended classes and continued on to serve an apprenticeship. This gave me in-depth knowledge of studio operations and safety. It provided an opportunity to learn from others and help others learn. We had many well know top Ceramics artists come in for weekend workshops. I have continued to create and sell my work since I moved back to South Florida in 2022.
